Panthers 4, Hurricanes 1: Tomas Fleischmann ignited a four-goal third period with his sixth tally and Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves as visiting Florida stunned Carolina.
Marcel Goc and Shawn Matthias each scored on the power play and Jerred Smithson added an empty-netter to cap the uprising. Defenseman Filip Kuba recorded a pair of assists for the Panthers, who ended a six-game winless streak (0-5-1) and got some revenge after a pair of losses to the Hurricanes earlier this month.
Jordan Staal ended the shutout bid after converting an end-to-end rush with 2:33 left in the third period. Dan Ellis made 40 saves as Carolina suffered its fourth straight loss (0-3-1) and dropped behind first-place Winnipeg in the Southeast Division. The Jets posted a 3-1 win over Boston later on Tuesday.
The Hurricanes turned the puck over in their own zone and Tomas Kopecky sent it across the crease to Fleischmann, who beat Ellis for a 1-0 lead at 7:39 of the third.
Back-to-back penalties by Carolina gave Florida a 5-on-3 opportunity and Goc stationed himself in the slot to redirect Kuba’s pass past Ellis on the stick side with 7:13 remaining. The Panthers did not waste the 5-on-4 advantage after that tally and scored 64 seconds later when Matthias stuffed a rebound between Ellis’ pads.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hurricanes captain Eric Staal saw his five-game point streak come to an end and was held off the scoresheet for the second time in 10 contests this month. … Florida entered the night last in the league in goals against and had surrendered at least three tallies in each of its previous six contests. … Ellis was credited with an assist on Staal’s goal.
