Panthers 4, Sabres 3: Defenseman Brian Campbell’s power-play goal midway through the third period snapped a tie as Florida rallied to win its first road game of the season.
Campbell, who started his career in Buffalo, pinched in from the point to pick up a rebound from Tomas Kopecky’s shot before firing it into an open net. Shawn Matthias, Peter Mueller and George Parros also scored and Kopecky finished with two assists for the Panthers.
Thomas Vanek and Cody Hodgson had a goal and two assists apiece and defenseman Alexander Sulzer also scored for Buffalo, which squandered a 3-1 lead. Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots in defeat.
Vanek scored his eighth of the season 2:46 into the game, one-timing a nifty between-the-legs pass from captain Jason Pominville in the slot past Jose Theodore, who made 17 saves. Matthias tied the game nearly six minutes later on a quick shot off a faceoff win by Jerred Smithson.
Hodgson made it 2-1 later in the first, converting a cross-crease feed from Vanek. The two Sabres combined to set up Sulzer early in the second, but goals from Parros - his first with Florida - and Mueller tied the game before the end of the period.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rookie Jonathan Huberdeau assisted on Campbell’s power-play winner and has two points in his last two games. … The Panthers finished 1-for-2 with the man advantage. … Parros’ last goal came on Feb. 10, 2012. It was his only goal last season.
