Defenseman Johnny Boychuk scored to snap a tie early in the third period and Milan Lucic tallied twice as the Boston Bruins advanced to the Eastern Conference finals by completing a sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 5-1 home triumph on Friday.

Brad Marchand and Daniel Paille added empty-net goals, Nathan Horton notched a pair of assists and Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas turned aside 22 shots for third-seeded Boston, which advanced to the conference finals for the first time since 1992. The Bruins will have home-ice advantage against the fifth-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the next round.

With the victory, the Bruins exacted a measure of revenge against the club which put them on the wrong end of history last year. The Flyers overcame a 3-0 deficit in the 2010 series to win the final four contests and left coach Claude Julien's team to answer plenty of questions during its summer vacation.

Boston won't have to answer to anyone after this series as Boychuk's tally just 2:42 into the third period effectively sent the Flyers home for the summer.

With the game tied at 1-1, Philadelphia won a faceoff in its defensive end but the puck skidded to the opposite circle. Boychuk quickly settled the loose puck and wired a shot over the glove of rookie Sergei Bobrovsky for his second goal of the playoffs.

Lucic provided insurance with his second tally of the game. A defensive miscue along the boards by the Flyers allowed Horton to find Lucic, who skated in uncontested and beat Bobrovsky between the pads with 4:57 remaining in the contest.

As Daniel Carcillo served a cross-checking penalty, Lucic opened the scoring with 7:58 remaining in the first period. From behind the goal line, Horton wired a brilliant centering feed to Lucic, who quickly deposited the puck past Bobrovsky for his first goal since March 22.

Kris Versteeg leveled the contest at 1-1 with 6:38 remaining in the second period. With the teams skating 4-on-4, captain Mike Richards forced a turnover and alertly pushed the puck ahead to Versteeg, who skated in on Thomas and backhanded the puck under the crossbar for his first goal of the playoffs.

Bobrovsky finished with 22 saves.
