NEW YORK -- A massive amount of injuries have created numerous opportunities to contribute to the New Orleans Pelicans in the waning days of the season.
Perhaps nobody is capitalizing on those chances more than Tim Frazier.
Frazier had the best game of career Sunday, collecting career highs of 19 points and 13 assists as the Pelicans used effective ball movement in a 106-87 rout of the Brooklyn Nets.
Frazier had his second career double-double and his best performance for the Pelicans occurred nearly a year after his other double-double of 13 and 10 for Portland on April 15.
In his 10th game for New Orleans, he became the first NBA player since Chris Duhon to get 13 assists and no turnovers off the bench and also joined Chris Paul as the second player in franchise history with at least 13 assists and no turnovers.
"I got the opportunity with New Orleans for the rest of the year," Frazier said. "We want to finish on as high a note as we can and finish strong."
On a team without its top five scorers, Frazier is among those finishing strong. He was signed for the rest of the season on March 26 and is averaging 12.6 and 7.2 assists.
"I've always been a pass-first point guard," Frazier said. "It helps me out that I'm able to score a little bit, so I was able to get in the lane, get some layups. I hit a couple of threes so I think that opened it up for me."
Frazier's passing helped the Pelicans shoot 55.3 percent (42-of-76) and outscore the Nets 106-80 in the final 43-plus minutes. The Pelicans had assists on their first 17 baskets and 19 of their first 20 before finishing with 30, three shy of their season best.
"When everybody gets to touch the ball and spread it around, everybody's happy," Frazier said. "We want to continue to go and share the ball and defend."
Frazier entered the game with 4:36 left in the first quarter and the Pelicans outscored the Nets by 30 when he was on the court.
"He did a good job for us," New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry said. "I thought he did a great job of controlling the game. He got the ball to the right people.
"I thought his decision making was great as to when we should be pushing the ball and play fast and when we should try to slow it down and try to get something good. For the most part, I just thought he did a good job quarterbacking the team."
The Pelicans placed five others in double figures as Luke Babbitt led the team with 21 points. Alexis Ajinca added 16, James Ennis and Dante Cunningham contributed 14 apiece and Jordan Hamilton added 13.
While the Pelicans thrived offensively, it was a difficult showing for the Nets (21-56) in their fifth straight loss as they rested Brook Lopez, Thaddeus Young and Bojan Bogdanovic.
After deciding to shut down Lopez and Young for the rest of the season, the Nets shot 38.8 percent, gave up 60 points in the paint, 32 points off 21 turnovers and 29 fast-break points.
"Defensively we were not in sync the whole night," Brooklyn interim coach Tony Brown said. "They were able to get pretty much what they wanted whether it be a 3-point shot or a big roll to the rim."
Sean Kilpatrick led the Nets with 15 points. Henry Sims started for Lopez and added 12 points while Thomas Robinson started in Young's place and collected 11 and 15 rebounds.
"It's frustrating," Kilpatrick said. "I'm pretty sure everyone on this team is frustrated with the fact that we're not playing well enough to grab wins."
Brooklyn was within 68-63 on a basket by Willie Reed with about two minutes left. New Orleans then answered with a fast-break layup by Toney Douglas, two free throws by Frazier, a cutting layup by Babbitt, a free throw by Ennis and sealed the win early in the fourth.
