Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph led a decisive third-quarter spurt after the Memphis Grizzlies withstood a first-half bench assault by the Detroit Pistons in a 105-84 victory Friday night at FedEx Forum.
Gay scored 13 of his 17 points in the third while Randolph added 10 of his 21 points and eight of his 14 rebounds as the Grizzlies turned a three-point halftime deficit into an 80-68 lead and cruised through the final 12 minutes.
The win was the second straight for Memphis after a five-game losing streak. The Grizzlies had four days off after Gay’s buzzer-beating jumper took down Miami on Saturday.
Rip Hamilton scored all 12 of his points in the third before picking up two technical fouls and getting ejected as the Pistons dropped their second straight after winning five of eight.
Memphis shot 50 percent in the first half and committed just four turnovers but trailed 50-47 because the Pistons' bench outpointed the Grizzlies’ 31-17. Charlie Villanueva led the bench with 11 points as the five players combined to shoot 12-of-16 from the floor and make all six free throws.
