Vincent Trocheck scored in the third round of a shootout and Alex Nedeljkovic denied all three attempts to fuel the visiting Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
Nedeljkovic (26 saves) thwarted Jason Robertson in the first shootout round and alertly pokechecked the puck away from Joe Pavelski in the second. Trocheck solved Jake Oettinger (18 saves) to begin the third before Nedeljkovic stopped Denis Gurianov to seal the win.
Carolina captain Jordan Staal scored his second goal in as many games to boost his point total to six (three goals, three assists) in four contests against the Stars this season. The Hurricanes won all four of those games.
Carolina's Jordan Martinook and Teuvo Teravainen each scored his first goal of the season and defenseman Jake Gardiner notched two assists in the win.
Jason Dickinson, Jason Robertson and Pavelski scored in regulation for the skidding Stars, who have dropped five in a row (0-2-3) and seven of their past eight games (1-3-4).
Dallas made the Hurricanes pay after Andrei Svechnikov was whistled for a roughing penalty with 1:50 remaining in the third period.
Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen saved a goal at one end before setting up Pavelski's wrist shot from above the right circle to forge a tie at 3 with 40 seconds to play. The goal was Pavelski's team-leading ninth of the season and NHL-best seventh on the power play, one more than his total through 67 games in 2019-20.
Late in the second period, Martin Necas' diagonal feed from the top of the right circle found Teravainen, who shoveled home a shot from deep in the left circle to give Carolina a 2-1 lead with seven seconds remaining.
Staal scored on the power play to double the advantage 2:06 into the third period. Svechnikov's feed from behind the net found Staal, who tucked the puck inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season.
Robertson's one-timer from the slot trimmed Carolina's lead to 3-2 at 8:22 of the third period.
Dickinson opened the scoring at 5:49 of the first period, but the Hurricanes got goals from Martinook at 17:29 and Teravainen at 19:53 to hold a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.
