Richard Newton scored on two short touchdown runs as Washington defeated visiting Washington State 31-13 on Friday afternoon in the Apple Cup in Seattle.
The Huskies (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) won their seventh consecutive game in the series between the cross-state rivals and for the 10th time in the past 11 meetings. Washington leads the all-time series 74-32-6.
The Cougars (6-6, 3-6), who entered the game fifth nationally with 533.0 yards per game, were held to 339.
Washington State record-setting quarterback Anthony Gordon completed 48 of 62 passes for 308 yards -- just the third time this season he failed to throw for 400 or more -- with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Gordon still became the first quarterback in Pac-12 history to surpass 5,000 passing yards in a season and the 16th in Football Bowl Subdivision history. Gordon finished the regular season with 5,228 yards.
Washington State's only touchdown came on the first drive of the game, on a 1-yard run by Max Borghi.
Borghi had 10 carries for 50 yards and made 12 receptions for 58 yards, as the Cougars were limited to short-range passes.
Jacob Eason completed 15 of 22 passes for 244 yards a touchdown for the Huskies and Salvon Ahmed rushed 16 times for 85 yards.
Washington took a 21-10 halftime lead.
After Washington State scored first, the Huskies tied it on a 3-yard run by Eason.
The Cougars regained the lead on Blake Mazza's 28-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
Eason hit Terrell Bynum with a 16-yard scoring strike to give Washington a 14-10 lead, and Newton scored on a 1-yard run with 1:38 left in the half to give the Huskies a 11-point advantage.
The Huskies took the second-half kickoff and scored in five plays, with Newton carrying the ball the final 2 yards.
Mazza kicked a 38-yarder for the Cougars with 6:40 left in the third to make it 28-13.
The only points of the fourth quarter were scored by the Huskies on Peyton Henry's 22-yard field goal with 6:35 remaining.
