Michael Penix, Jr. led three touchdown drives in the first quarter and Indiana scored seven TDs overall, easily defeating Eastern Illinois 52-0 on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.

The Hoosiers' offense performed so well that the redshirt freshman quarterback was taken out of the game before the halftime break. He finished 14 of 20 passing for 197 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in his second career start.

Indiana's 52-point victory is a new school record, surpassing a 51-point win when they defeated Missouri 58-7 in 1990.

Penix led the Hoosiers (2-0) on an efficient 10-play, 59-yard drive to open the game, and connected with Miles Marshall on a 10-yard touchdown for the early 7-0 lead. Ty Fryfogle brought down an 18-yard pass and tight end Peyton Hendershot added a 15-yard reception to move Indiana into scoring position.

The Hoosiers doubled their advantage when Stevie Scott III ran in an 5-yard touchdown on second-and-goal late in the first quarter after Penix's 36-yard throw to wide receiver Whop Philyor helped set up the scoring situation.

Indiana took the 21-0 lead after blocking an Eastern Illinois punt that set them up 32 yards away from the end zone. Philyor deftly avoided a series of would-be tacklers on a 29-yard catch-and-run from Penix that put the Hoosiers on the 3 and Cole Gest ran in his first career touchdown to cap off the two-play drive.

Hendershot scored on an 8-yard touchdown reception near the close of the first half after Indiana drove 80 yards in 10 plays for the 28-0 advantage. Penix connected with Donavan Hale on a 23-yard pass play and with Scott for 16 yards to set up the touchdown on what would be his final drive of the game.

Indiana put in backup quarterback Peyton Ramsey with under two minutes left in the second quarter, and one play later, he found Ronnie Walker, Jr. on a 64-yard pass play that went for a touchdown and gave the Hoosiers a 35-0 lead.

Ramsey then connected with Hale on a 43-yard touchdown pass to give Indiana the 42-0 edge on the opening drive of the third quarter. Ramsey was pulled from the game in the fourth quarter, going 13 of 14 passing for 226 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Sampson James rushed for a 1-yard touchdown and the 49-0 lead to begin the fourth quarter after the Hoosiers drove 55 yards in seven plays. Third-string quarterback Jack Tuttle went 3 of 7 for 18 yards.

John Brantley earned the starting quarterback nod for Eastern Illinois (0-2), and went 8-of-17 passing for 49 yards before being replaced by Harry Woodberry, who went 3 of 8 for 15 passing yards.

Hale led the Hoosiers with five catches for 110 yards and a score and Philyor had 75 yards off four receptions as Indiana racked up 441 passing yards to EIU's 64. Scott paced Indiana with 61 of the team's 114 rushing yards.

Indiana moved to 3-0 all-time against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference, and Eastern Illinois fell to 0-9 in competition against Big Ten opponents.

With the win, the 16th in its last 18 home openers, Indiana moves on to a Week 3 clash at home against No. 5 Ohio State.
