Washington State 91, UTSA 71: DaVonte Lacy poured in 21 of his season-high 31 points in the first half to lead a stunning Cougars 3-point barrage in their win over the visiting Roadrunners.
One game after shooting 5-for-30 from 3-point range in its 77-71 loss to Idaho, Washington State (4-4) tied a school record by drilling 18-of-30 from beyond the arc, including 11-for-16 in the first half. Lacy was the facilitator by scoring 21 points in the first 10 minutes while canning 5-of-7 treys in the first half and finishing a season-best 8-of-12 from long range.
UTSA (3-4), coming off an 88-83 overtime win against Northern Arizona, was led by Ryan Bowie with 22 points. Bowie also enjoyed success from beyond the arc, going 4-for-7 while scoring 17 points in the second half.
The Roadrunners trailed by 26 points after the first 20 minutes but didn’t go away quietly and closed within 80-65 following a 3-pointer by Keon Lewis. That’s as close as UTSA would get as the Cougars led by as many as 22 points in the closing minutes.
The Cougars led 28-18 when Lacy made a jumper with just over 10 minutes left in the first half to ignite a 15-5 run capped by a trey by Brett Boese. The lead swelled to 52-26 by intermission after Dexter Kernich-Drew scored the final six points of the half on a 3-pointer, layup and a free throw.
GAME NOTEBOOK: It was a homecoming for Kaj-Björn Sherman, who grew up in Mercer Island, Wash., and Lewis, who is from Seattle. … Lacy moved into a tie for seventh place on Washington State’s career scoring list. … The Cougars shot 60.8 percent for the game.
