No. 18 Nevada-Las Vegas 68, Portland 60: Anthony Bennett scored 18 points and Anthony Marshall added 16 as the visiting Rebels rallied to down the Pilots.
Justin Hawkins scored 15 points for UNLV (6-1), which was missing standout forward Mike Moser because of groin and hip soreness.
Ryan Nicholas had 15 points and a career-high 19 rebounds and Korey Thieleke tallied 12 points for Portland (3-5), which led for most of the first 25 minutes before wilting.
UNLV trailed 40-31 four-plus minutes into the second half before using a 13-2 run to take a two-point lead. A short time later, Hawkins scored nine points during a 12-0 spurt as the Rebels took a 56-47 lead midway through the half.
The Pilots were within 63-60 on Thieleke’s basket with 3:59 left, but didn’t score again and missed their final five shots. Bennett’s steal and dunk with five seconds left punctuated UNLV’s victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: UNLV had 12 steals with forcing the Pilots to commit 21 turnovers. Bennett, Hawkins and Marshall had three steals apiece. … Portland led 28-22 at halftime as the Rebels shot 24.2 percent and went 1-for-15 from 3-point range. … The contest was scheduled to give Moser a chance to play in his hometown of Portland. Moser was the state of Oregon’s Mr. Basketball in 2009.
