Donte Poole led the way with 28 points as No. 14 Murray State survived a scare and remained undefeated with an 82-74 victory over visiting Tennessee Tech in an Ohio Valley Conference game Saturday.
Isaiah Canaan added 24 points and Jewuan Long scored 11 for the Racers (18-0, 6-0 OVC), who are one of three undefeated teams left in the country.
Murray State has played on the edge in each of its last three Ohio Valley Conference contests but has managed to pull away late in each. Saturday’s script was the same, the Golden Eagles staying within a few points for most of the second half. The Racers pulled within 67-65 when Zac Swansey buried a 3-pointer with 3:58 remaining.
Long responded with his own 3-pointer and Poole converted a traditional three-point play with 2:38 on the clock to stretch the lead back to 73-65.
Canaan hit six free throws in the final 2:10 to seal it.
Murray State jumped out fast in the first half, grabbing a 26-9 lead behind six 3-pointers. But as the Racers cooled off from beyond the arc, Tennessee Tech was able to creep back in and closed to within 39-36 at the half.
Jud Dillard collected 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles (11-7, 3-2).
