Jamie Skeen scored 21 points and Bradford Burgess added 16 and 12 rebounds as Virginia Commonwealth upset No. 25 George Mason, 79-63, on Sunday in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship in Richmond, Va.
Joey Rodriguez chipped in 13 points for the Rams (23-10, 12-6 CAA), who will play in Monday’s final against either Hofstra or Old Dominion with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Cam Long scored 22 points for the Patriots (26-6, 16-2), who had the longest winning streak in the nation come to an end at 16 games but will likely still earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team.
VCU dominated the first half, going 9 of 18 from beyond the arc and recording assists on 13 of 14 field goals to jump out to a 39-25 lead at the break. Skeen led the way with 14 points, capping a 21-5 burst that ended the half with his third 3-pointer of the period.
George Mason began the second with an 8-1 spurt to draw within 40-33 but could not close the gap, as the Rams extended it back out to double figures and continued to pull away.
