It may have been a consolation game, but it didn’t mean the upset bug was immune from showing up.
A layup by B.J. Holmes with 19 seconds remaining gave Texas A&M a 54-51 victory over No. 20 Temple in the first game of Sunday’s Old Spice Classic action at Orlando, Fla.
Temple (3-2) built a 15-8 lead with 8:46 remaining in the first half, only to have Texas A&M rattle off 10 unanswered points in the next three minutes. The Aggies (5-1) took a 30-25 lead into the locker room.
Texas A&M had a 42-29 lead in the second half before the Owls rallied and took the lead on a Khalif Wyatt layup with 6:46 remaining.
A jumper by David Loubeau put the Aggies up 50-49 with 1:28 to go, but the Owls answered with a pair of Ramone Moore free throws with 54 seconds to play. Holmes’ basket and a pair of Khris Middleton free throws gave the Aggies the upset win.
Loubeau led Texas A&M with 13 points, and Nail Hibbert came off the bench for 12 points. Temple’s Lavoy Allen and Juan Fernandez led the Owls with 10 points each.
