Padres 8, Dodgers 2: Clayton Richard tossed seven solid innings and Chase Headley hit a grand slam as San Diego avoided a four-game sweep by defeating visiting Los Angeles for its first win of the season.
Richard (1-0) gave up a pair of runs — none earned — on two hits and struck out three for the Padres, who had lost 16 of the previous 21 games against Los Angeles. San Diego managed just eight runs and 12 hits in the first three games of the series, but racked up 12 hits in this one.
San Diego scored a pair of first-inning runs off former teammate Aaron Harang (0-1), who struggled in his return to Petco Park. The right-hander gave up seven hits and five walks before exiting with one out in the fifth and trailing 4-0.
Andy Parrino had a pair of hits, including his first major-league home run in the fourth, and Jesus Guzman and John Baker each added run-scoring singles for San Diego, which finished last in the NL West in 2011.
Matt Kemp extended his hit streak to 16 games with a two-run home run in the sixth, pulling the Dodgers within 4-2.
But San Diego loaded the bases with three straight singles in the eighth, and Headley’s grand slam to left put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTEBOOK: A 4-0 start would have been the Dodgers’ first since 1981, the year they won the World Series … Harang went 14-7 with a 3.64 ERA for the Padres in 2011 … Kemp had seven hits, two home runs and eight RBIs in the series … The grand slam was Headley’s first hit of the season, breaking an 0-for-12 slump ... Andre Ethier hit a two-run home run in the ninth, his second of the season.
