Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano each homered and the visiting New York Yankees avoided a three-game sweep with their 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
The win moved the Yankees 3 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the American League
East. The Red Sox fell 9-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
Down 5-4 in the top of the seventh, the Yankees took the lead when Peter Bourjos dropped Mark Teixeira’s fly ball in front of the center field wall, allowing Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter to score.
Cory Wade (5-0) earned the win in relief of Freddy Garcia, who gave up five runs over five innings. Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 40th save.
Bourjos and Howie Kendrick and each blasted two-run homers for Los Angeles, which fell 2 1/2 games behind American League West-leading Texas. The Rangers beat Oakland 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.
After Jared Weaver and Dan Haren silenced the Yankees in the first two games of the series, Ervin Santana (11-11) gave up six runs over six innings in the finale.
Rookie first baseman Mark Trumbo entered the game with nine hits in his last seven games, but he went 0-for-4 Sunday and popped out with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
