Starting pitching won’t be that huge of a concern for New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi if his team keeps hitting like this. The Yankees beat the Tigers 10-6 on Saturday and have a chance for the series sweep Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Mark Teixeira and Russell Martin each hit three-run homers, as five
Yankees drove in runs against Detroit (0-2). Teixeira also went deep in
Thursday's season opener and has already matched his home run total from
last April. Alex Rodriguez had a pair of RBIs, including a solo shot in
the sixth for New York.
The Yankees (2-0) battered Brad Penny (0-1), who finally entered a season entirely healthy and had a strong spring training. The right-hander gave up eight earned runs on seven hits and four walks in just 4 1/3 innings.
Penny gave up a 6-0 lead after two innings, easing the pressure on counterpart A.J. Burnett (1-0), who is coming of a career-worst 2010 season. Burnett, though, had his breaking ball working early and struck out six in five innings for the win. He yielded three runs. Mariano Rivera got the final out for his second save.
Victor Martinez hit his first home run as a Tiger, going deep off Luis Ayala in the eighth.
