A.J. Burnett pitched into the seventh inning and Robinson Cano homered in the New York Yankees’ 8-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
Alex Rodriguez remained stuck on 599 career homers despite a two-hit night. Rodriguez singled in a run in the first as the Yankees pounded Indians All-Star starter Fausto Carmona for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.
It was easily the shortest start of the season for Carmona (10-8), who allowed 10 hits. The only New York starter without a hit was Derek Jeter, who went 0-for-5.
Mark Teixeira and Brett Gardner each had two hits and two RBIs for the Yankees, who have taken two of three in the four-game series.
The start of the game was delayed about 45 minutes for rain, but that had little effect on Burnett (9-8), who allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked three. Burnett hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts, spanning 11 1/3 innings.
Trevor Crowe had three of the Indians’ eight hits.
