NEW YORK -- Center fielder Mookie Betts put the finishing touch on a bizarre night at Yankee Stadium by lifting a sacrifice fly in the top of the 19th inning as the Boston Red Sox outlasted the New York Yankees, 6-5, in a game that featured a power failure in the 12th and took over seven hours to complete.

The Red Sox took their third lead of the extra innings when shortstop Xander Bogaerts singled in his fourth straight at-bat. He stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and trotted home when Betts lifted a 2-2 pitch to center field.

On his third attempt to secure the victory, Steven Wright (1-0) struggled again. He gave up a leadoff single to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury but the game finally ended at 2:13 am ET by getting designated hitter Garrett Jones on a double play.

Not including the delay, the game took 6 hours, 49 minutes to complete and in terms of time was the longest in Boston history and the second longest in New York history. The teams went a combined 5-for-28 with runners in scoring position, stranded 33 runners and struck out 28 times.

The Yankees tied the game twice on home runs, getting a two-out solo shot from

third baseman Chase Headley in the ninth against Edward Mujica and a leadoff home run

by first baseman Mark Teixeira in the 16th off Wright. Boston had taken the lead in the top of the 16th when David Ortiz blasted a home run off Esmil Rogers.

In the 17th, left fielder Brett Gardner drew a one-out walk and Jones got ahead in the count while Wright made two pickoff throws. On the third attempt, Gardner was picked off and the ruling by first base umpire Mike Muchlinski was upheld following a 45-second replay review.

The Yankees tied the game for the third time in the 18th when right fielder Carlos Beltran's double off Wright went off left fielder Hanley Ramirez's glove, scoring pinch runner John-Ryan Murphy from third. With the remainder of the crowd chanting his first name, shortstop Didi Gregorius was unable to get the game-winning hit.

Before the Yankees tied it again, the Red Sox took a 5-4 lead on a one-out single by third baseman Pablo Sandoval in the top of the 18th.

After Jones doubled, Teixeira grounded out and the game continued.

In the 12th, the game was delayed for 16 minutes due to a power outage while Beltran took ball one from Tommy Layne. As Layne threw his first pitch, a group of lights in the upper deck went out in what the Yankees said was caused by a power surge.

Before Headley's home run in the ninth, the Yankees scored twice in the sixth on an RBI single by Alex Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly by catcher Brian McCann. New York seemingly had a golden opportunity to tie or take the lead in the eighth but Gardner was easily thrown out trying to steal second and Rodriguez struck out swinging against Junichi Tazawa.

The Red Sox built a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Sandoval with two outs in the first and a two-run single by right fielder Daniel Nava with one out in the sixth on a ball that deflected off Teixeira's glove and into right field.

Miley retired the first 10 hitters on 41 pitches before Gardner had a double that went over the third base bag and trickled into left field. Miley finished the inning by striking out Rodriguez and getting Teixeira on a fly out to left field and also easily picked off Headley for the second out of the fifth.

Boston strung together three singles in the first off Eovaldi and took a 1-0 lead on a base hit by Sandoval. The Red Sox had runners in the next four innings but did not score.
