Phillies 5, Padres 2: Marlon Byrd homered and drove in four runs while A.J. Burnett tossed 7 1/3 solid innings as host Philadelphia recorded just its second victory in 10 games.

Chase Utley had an RBI single and scored twice for the Phillies, who claimed the opener of a six-game homestand to begin a stretch of 21 contests in 20 days. Ryan Howard and Ben Revere joined Utley with two hits and Jonathan Papelbon worked out of a bases-loaded jam to secure his 300th career save.

Will Venable belted a solo homer with two outs in the third inning for the Padres, who have dropped six of their last eight. Carlos Quentin ended an 0-for-24 drought with a double before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

After Utley plated Revere to forge a 1-1 tie in the fourth, Howard singled before Byrd deposited a 3-2 fastball from Ian Kennedy (5-7) over the wall in right field for a three-run homer. Byrd tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth off Kennedy, who was foiled in his bid to win a fourth straight start after permitting five runs on seven hits in as many innings.

Burnett (4-5) rebounded after yielding a season-high eight earned runs versus Washington on Wednesday to subdue light-hitting San Diego. The 37-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and Jake Diekman struck out both batters he faced before Papelbon made things interesting while notching his 14th save of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins, who went 1-for-4, singled in the eighth inning to move within three hits of tying Hall-of-Famer Mike Schmidt (2,234) for the franchise lead. ... Venable, who finished 2-for-3 versus Burnett, is 7-for-16 in his career with two homers against the hurler. ... Philadelphia agreed to terms with RHP Aaron Nola, who was the seventh overall pick of the 2014 draft. Nola, 21, posted an 11-1 mark with a 1.47 ERA this season with Louisiana State.
