Nationals 3, Mets 0 (2nd): Gio Gonzalez recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts and scattered one hit over seven innings as host Washington inched closer to securing home-field advantage in the National League by salvaging a split of the doubleheader.
Anthony Rendon collected two of his team's six hits and drove in a run after he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Tyler Moore drove in and scored a run for the Nationals, who have won 15 of 19 versus New York and enjoy a 2 1/2-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the NL.
Daniel Murphy had a one-out single against Gonzalez in the first inning for the Mets, who posted a 7-4 triumph in the opening game of the doubleheader. Zack Wheeler (11-11) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings to fall to 1-4 against Washington this season.
Gonzalez (10-10) struck out the side in both the second and third innings and retired 14 in a row at one point en route to reaching double-digit victories for the fifth straight season. Matt Thornton stranded two runners on base in the eighth and Drew Storen retired the side in order in the ninth for his 11th save.
The Nationals drew first blood in the fourth inning as Moore's slow grounder resulted in a fielder's choice, allowing Jayson Werth to score. Wilson Ramos crossed the plate as a passed ball eluded catcher Anthony Recker and Moore scored after Rendon was hit by a pitch from Wheeler with the bases loaded.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gonzalez struck out at least 10 batters in a game for the 11th time of his career. ... Rehabbing Mets RHP Matt Harvey was in attendance at Yankee Stadium for New York SS Derek Jeter's final home game. ... Washington LF Scott Hairston denied New York's Eric Campbell of an extra-base hit by making a leaping catch for the final out of the fourth inning.
