Marlins 6, Brewers 4: Garrett Jones went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs while Giancarlo Stanton hit his National League-leading 37th blast as visiting Miami handed Milwaukee its 12th loss in 13 games.
Christian Yelich knocked in a run with two singles and Marcell Ozuna also homered among two hits as the Marlins remained 4 ½ games out in the race for the NL’s second wild card. Brad Penny (2-1) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while getting the benefit of three double plays to earn the victory.
Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo (8-9) became the franchise’s all-time strikeout leader, but was pounded for six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Jonathan Lucroy went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Scooter Gennett collected a pair of hits and an RBI as the Brewers dropped 1 ½ games behind for the NL’s second wild card.
Casey McGehee’s two-out RBI single put Miami ahead before Gennett lined a run-scoring double to highlight a two-run bottom of the first for the Brewers. Ozuna responded by launching a mammoth 462-foot homer off the scoreboard in the center field in the second and Jones followed immediately with another solo blast.
Yelich singled home another run later in the second before Stanton led off with a homer to right-center and Jones added an RBI double in the third. Carlos Gomez doubled home a run and scored on Lucroy’s infield single in the eighth off A.J. Ramos before Steve Cishek notched his 33rd save with a perfect ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanton’s 154th career homer tied him with Dan Uggla for the most in franchise history and he moved within one of 400 RBIs. ... Gallardo fanned one Monday to bring his total to 1,207, passing former record holder Ben Sheets (1,206). … Yelich extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
