Marlins 5, Padres 0: Jose Fernandez struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings and Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs as Miami posted its third straight win.
Derek Dietrich, Christian Yelich, Casey McGehee and Stanton had two hits apiece for the Marlins, who are off to a surprising 5-1 start after losing 100 games last season. Fernandez (2-0) yielded three hits and two walks while throwing 108 pitches and improved to 11-0 with a 1.14 ERA in 17 career starts at home.
Fernandez outdueled San Diego starter Andrew Cashner (0-1), who allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six over six frames. Everth Cabrera had two hits for the Padres, who have lost four straight following an Opening Day win over the Dodgers.
The Marlins broke a scoreless tie in the third when Stanton singled in Fernandez from second base, and Fernandez settled in after throwing 56 pitches in the first three innings. Dietrich added to the lead with a run-scoring single in the sixth and the Marlins scored again in the seventh when Yelich singled with two outs and scored on Stanton’s double into the right-center field gap.
Jedd Gyorko went hitless in four at-bats and is off to a 2-for-18 start for San Diego, which has scored a total of eight runs during its 1-4 start. The Marlins added two runs in the eighth off Joaquin Benoit and won their fifth in a row against the Padres.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Marlins 2B Rafael Furcal (hamstring) will go to extended spring training Monday and is expected to begin playing in minor league games around April 13. … Stanton has an RBI in each of the Marlins’ first six games and has 11 RBIs in his last 10 games against the Padres. … The crowd of 35,188 was the fourth largest in Marlins Park history.
