Indians 3, Royals 2 (11): Michael Brantley delivered the tiebreaking single in the 11th inning as visiting Cleveland defeated Kansas City for the second straight night.
Jose Ramirez tripled off Scott Downs (0-4) to start the 11th and scored when Brantley chopped a bouncer that hopped over the head of Royals second baseman Omar Infante with the infield playing in. Carlos Santana added an RBI single as the Indians won for the 13th time in 18 games.
Josh Tomlin (6-8) pitched out of a 10th-inning jam and allowed Salvador Perez’s two-out RBI double in the 11th as Cleveland moved within 3 1/2 games behind American League Central co-leaders Kansas City and Detroit. The Indians also trail for the AL’s second wild card by the same margin.
Cleveland’s Jason Kipnis and Yan Gomes hit back-to-back doubles off James Shields in the fourth to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Shields allowed one run and five hits in seven innings for Kansas City, which stranded a season-high 16 runners.
Trevor Bauer gave up four hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings for Cleveland and the Royals tied the game with an unearned run in the eighth. A throwing error by Indians reliever Scott Atchison set up the run, which scored when Lorenzo Cain’s fielder’s choice plated Alex Gordon.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Infante (shoulder) went 2-for-5 after missing the previous four games. … Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway was ejected in the first inning for arguing a checked-swing call. … INF Jayson Nix reported to the Royals after being claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh and INF Christian Colon was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas to open up a roster spot.
