Rockies 10, White Sox 4: DJ LeMahieu had three hits and drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth, as Colorado won the rubber game of the three-game series against visiting Chicago.
Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez also had three hits apiece and Justin Morneau and Nolan Arenado each had two hits and a run scored for the Rockies, who bounced back after losing 15-3 on Tuesday night. Rockies starter Juan Nicasio allowed four runs and eight hits before Matt Belisle, Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers (1-0) and LaTroy Hawkins combined to shut out the White Sox over the final four innings.
White Sox starter Erik Johnson took a one-run lead into the sixth but didn’t earn a decision after allowing four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 frames, and Scott Downs (0-2) took the loss for Chicago after allowing the first run in the six-run eighth. Adam Eaton had two hits in the leadoff spot for the second consecutive game, Jose Abreu also had two hits and Conor Gillaspie drove in two runs for the White Sox.
After the Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the first, Chicago scored twice in the second on an RBI single by Tyler Flowers and an infield single by Eaton that scored Alexei Ramirez from third. Colorado added single runs in the second and third innings on two-out RBI singles by Blackmon and Arenado to move ahead 3-2.
Nicasio nearly worked out of a jam in the fifth inning but Gillaspie delivered a two-out, two-run single to center to give the White Sox a 4-3 lead. Johnson then nearly escaped a leadoff triple by Morneau in the sixth but LeMahieu doubled with two outs to tie the score at 4, and it was LeMahieu’s two-RBI single that sparked the six-run eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rockies RHP Wilton Lopez, who signed a one-year $2.2 million deal in January, was optioned to Triple-A after allowing six runs, including three home runs, in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s loss and INF Josh Rutledge was recalled. … An error by Kansas City 3B Mike Moustakas in the fifth inning of a game Saturday against the White Sox was overturned Wednesday and rookie catcher Adrian Nieto was awarded a base hit, which is his first in the majors. … Chicago RHP Ronald Belisario allowed five runs and five hits while recording just one out in the eighth.
