Rangers 5, Rays 4: A.J. Pierzynski and Mitch Moreland hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning and also ignited a later rally as host Texas held off Tampa Bay in a controversial finish.
Alexi Ogando (2-0) allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings for the Rangers, who have hit eight home runs in their last three games. Elvis Andrus had a
two-run single, Adrian Beltre added an RBI double and Moreland, who started the season 2-for-21, had three hits.
Texas' Joe Nathan became the 24th pitcher to record 300 saves despite yielding an RBI single to Sean Rodriguez in the ninth inning. He caught Ben Zobrist looking at a curveball that appeared to be well out of the strike zone with Rodriguez on first to end the game as Rays manager Joe Maddon vehemently protested.
With two outs in a 1-1 game in the fourth inning, Pierzynski - 9-for-22 this season - drove an 0-1 pitch into the second row in right field for his first homer in a
Rangers uniform. Two pitches later, Moreland took Hellickson out to right-center.
The Rangers added what proved to be big runs in the seventh inning when Andrus delivered a two-out two-run single after Pierzynski and Moreland began the inning with singles. Tampa Bay scored twice in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice grounder against Derek Lowe.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeremy Hellickson (0-1) allowed three runs and five hits in five innings
on his 26th birthday. ... Texas reliever Joe Ortiz protected a 3-1 lead when he relieved Ogando with two on and one out in the sixth and got a pair of groundouts. He retired all five batters he faced. ... Nathan is second in saves among active players to all-time leader Mariano Rivera (609) of the New York Yankees. The Phillies' Jonathan Papelbon is next at 258.
