Mariners 6, Athletics 3: Raul Ibanez hit a three-run homer and Hisashi Iwakuma struck out nine in seven innings as host Seattle handed Oakland its fifth straight loss.
Iwakuma (4-1) gave up a leadoff single to John Jaso to start the game and retired the next 16 hitters until Eric Sogard reached on an error in the sixth. He gave up two runs, four hits and walked none to help the Mariners to their eighth win in 11 games.
Michael Morse had a run-scoring single and Justin Smoak had an RBI double in the opening inning for Seattle. Kyle Seager singled and Smoak walked in the third to set the table for Ibanez, who homered into the right-field stands off Dan Straily (1-1) to give the Mariners a 5-0 edge.
Kendrys Morales hit a run-scoring double in the fifth for Seattle’s final run. Tom Wilhelmsen worked a flawless ninth for his 10th save in 10 opportunities.
Jed Lowrie delivered a two-run double to right in the sixth and Derek Norris homered in the eighth for Oakland’s runs.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seager went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored three times. … Straily allowed six runs and six hits in five-plus innings. … The homer was the first for Ibanez since April 14.
