Rays 4, Yankees 0: Alex Cobb dominated into the eighth inning and Evan Longoria drove in three runs as Tampa Bay spoiled Mariano Rivera’s home finale.
Rivera received a rousing standing ovation from the crowd when he emerged from the bullpen with one out in the eighth. The future Hall of Famer worked out of a jam in that inning and got the first two outs in the ninth before longtime teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte emerged from the dugout and removed him from the game. That action prompted another round of cheers from fans, teammates and the Rays that lasted several minutes.
Cobb (11-3) surrendered one hit through the first seven innings and was lifted after allowing two hits to begin the eighth. Delmon Young added a solo homer as Tampa Bay maintained its lead in the wild-card race with its seventh straight victory.
Wil Myers singled to lead off the fourth, moved up on a walk and raced home ahead of the throw on Longoria’s single to give Tampa Bay a 1-0 edge. Young led off the seventh and doubled the advantage, ripping a 1-0 fastball into the bullpen in left-center.
Ben Zobrist singled and James Loney doubled in the eighth in front of Longoria, who sent a single into center to score both runners and prompt the Yankees to go to Rivera. Ivan Nova (9-6) allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings to absorb the loss.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Longoria went 7-for-13 with eight RBIs in the series after going 3-for-26 in his previous seven contests. … Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez (legs) sat out the game after pulling himself from Wednesday’s contest. … Pettitte had his final major-league start pushed back from Friday to Saturday in Houston, where the Yankees will wrap up their season. Pettitte was called out of the dugout by the fans shortly after Rivera made his exit. The Rays will finish up at Toronto.
