Rays 10, Yankees 6: James Loney homered and drove in four runs as visiting Tampa Bay moved into first place in the American League East and spoiled Alfonso Soriano's return to New York.
Evan Longoria ripped a two-run double, Yunel Escobar had a run-scoring double and Sam Fuld and rookie Wil Myers added RBI singles to highlight a six-run second inning. Jeremy Hellickson (10-3) allowed one run on four hits in six frames to record his sixth consecutive victory for the Rays, who won for the 20th time in 23 outings to move a half-game ahead of Boston.
Tampa Bay continued its mastery of CC Sabathia (9-9), who yielded five-plus runs for the sixth time this season - including in all four starts versus the Rays. The left-hander allowed seven runs and nine hits in five innings to take the loss.
After Escobar's double opened the scoring in the second, the Rays tallied five times with two outs to take hold of the contest. Fuld singled to left to plate Escobar before Yankees catcher Austin Romine misfired on his throw to first following Desmond Jennings' bunt single, allowing Jose Lobaton to score. Longoria drilled a 1-0 slider to center to plate a pair before Myers added an RBI single to left.
Loney gave Tampa Bay a 10-1 lead in the seventh inning by jumping on an offering from reliever Adam Warren and belting it into the right-field seats for his 10th homer. New York scratched for two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth before Fernando Rodney got the final out for his 25th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Soriano, who opened his career with the Yankees in 1999, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs for minor-league RHP Corey Black on Friday afternoon. He went 0-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI fielder's choice. ... Sabathia has allowed at least seven runs in three straight starts for the first time in his career. He became the third Yankee since 1920 to do so, joining Chien-Ming Wang (2009) and Red Ruffing (1934). ... Myers, who went 2-for-5, has recorded seven consecutive multi-hit games for Tampa Bay - one shy of Carl Crawford's franchise record, which was set in 2007. Myers is 20-for-41 in his last 10 contests.
