Yankees 6, Mariners 1: Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira both homered during a six-run third inning as visiting New York cruised past Seattle in the opener of their four-game series.
Phil Hughes (3-4) struck out seven in seven-plus innings and was charged with one unearned run and three hits to win for the first time since May 10. The Yankees have won four consecutive games.
Cano hit a three-run shot to right off Aaron Harang (2-6) to start the third-inning uprising as New York recorded eight hits and sent 11 batters to the plate. Teixiera followed with his blast to right-center field, while Vernon Wells and Ichiro Suzuki added run-scoring singles later in the frame.
Hughes departed after walking Kelly Shoppach to start the eighth. Kevin Youkilis made a fielding error later in the inning and Kyle Seager drove in Seattle's lone run with double off reliever Boone Logan.
Harang allowed six runs and eight hits in a season-low 2 1/3 innings. The right-hander has surrendered five or more runs in four of his nine starts.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Suzuki went 1-for-4 and is batting .211 in 38 at-bats against his former club. … The Mariners optioned former Yankees RHP Hector Noesi to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled Blake Beavan, who allowed one hit in 6 2/3 scoreless innings after replacing Harang. … Seattle selected college 3B D.J. Peterson (New Mexico) with the 12th overall pick of Thursday’s first-year player draft, while the Yankees chose 3B Eric Jagielo (Notre Dame) with the 26th pick.
