Athletics 5, White Sox 4 (10): Yoenis Cespedes hit two home runs and Adam Rosales delivered a go-ahead solo homer in the top of the 10th inning as visiting Oakland won for the 17th time in its last 20 games.
After Matt Thornton (0-2) got a strikeout and groundout to begin the 10th, Rosales pounded a 1-2 high fastball deep into the left-field stands to give the Athletics their first lead of the contest. Jerry Blevins (5-0) tossed a scoreless ninth for the victory and Grant Balfour worked around a leadoff single for his 14th save.
The White Sox, coming off a 16-inning win at the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, tallied three runs in the third as Tyler Flowers and Alejandro De Aza scored on Alexei Ramirez’s bloop single. Ramirez stole second four pitches later, took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a single by Alex Rios.
Chicago starter Jose Quintana was perfect through 3 2/3 innings until Cespedes struck for the first of his two home runs in the fourth. Oakland trimmed its deficit to 3-2 in the fifth on a two-out RBI double from Rosales, but De Aza got the run back for Chicago in the bottom half when he singled home Gordon Beckham.
Cespedes struck again in the sixth, recording his second multi-homer game in three days as he drove Quintana's 2-1 outside fastball out to right. The Athletics evened it up in the seventh when Josh Reddick hammered a hanging curveball deep into the right-field stands for his first home run since April 4.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oakland’s four home runs were a season high. … White Sox RHP Jesse Crain struck out a pair during a flawless ninth and has not been scored upon in his last 24 appearances, striking out 31 batters in 23 innings over that span. … Balfour has converted 32 consecutive save opportunities.
