Orioles 8, Red Sox 5: Manny Machado hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run rally in the ninth as visiting Baltimore stunned Boston.
Red Sox closer Joel Harahan (0-1) yielded a solo home run to Chris Davis leading off the ninth and loaded the bases with two outs before unleashing a wild pitch to force in the tying run. Machado followed and got a 1-0 fastball up, knocking it over the Green Monster in left to put the Orioles on top.
Nick Markakis added a homer and two RBIs and Darren O’Day (1-0) worked a scoreless inning to pick up the win for the Orioles, who snapped a three-game slide. Jim Johnson tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his third save.
Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit back-to-back home runs off Tommy Hunter in the sixth inning to put Boston on top 5-3 after the game had been halted 41 minutes because of rain. Saltalamacchia added a pair of doubles and Ryan Dempster struck out seven while allowing three runs - one earned - and three hits in five innings for Boston.
Jacoby Ellsbury’s RBI triple that sliced past Nate McLouth and down the left field line gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead in the third inning and Shane Victorino followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run gap. Markakis cut it back to 3-2 with his homer into the bullpen in right-center and an error in left field by rookie Jackie Bradley Jr. allowed the tying run to cross in the fourth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston’s record 820-game sellout streak (794 regular season games and 26 in the playoffs) came to an end. It was the longest streak in major professional sports, surpassing the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers’ record of 814. … Red Sox RHP John Lackey (biceps) was placed on the 15-day DL and SS Stephen Drew (concussion) was activated. Boston also optioned SS Jose Iglesias to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalled RHP Alex Wilson. … Baltimore traded RHP Luis Ayala to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for a minor leaguer.
