Edwin Encarnacion hit a walk-off homer in the 12th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays dealt the visiting Los Angeles Angels' playoff hopes a blow with a 4-3 victory on Thursday.
Alberto Callaspo homered for Los Angeles, which fell three games back of
Boston in the American League wild-card race and remained five games
behind AL-West leading Texas. The Rangers lost to Oakland earlier
Thursday, but the Angels couldn’t capitalize.
Rookie Eric Thames also homered for the Blue Jays, who are 11-0 at home in extra innings -- if it remains that way the Jays would become first team to win at least 10 extra-inning games at home without a loss.
Encarnacion led off the 12th by drilling a 3-2 slider from Garrett Richards (0-2) to left field just right of the foul pole for his 17th homer. Shawn Camp (5-3) earned the win after a perfect top-half of the 12th.
It was the Angels’ major league-high-tying 13th extra-inning loss.
Los Angeles finished 5-5 on its final road trip of the season. The Angels return home to face Oakland this weekend before wrapping up the regular season with a three-game series against the Rangers.
