Pedro Severino belted a grand slam to highlight his six-RBI performance and Keegan Akin recorded his first win of the season in the host Baltimore Orioles' 13-1 romp over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon.
Severino provided the fireworks in a six-run fifth inning with his second career grand slam. He capped a five-run eighth with a two-run single for the Orioles, who have won two in a row following a 19-game losing streak.
Ramon Urias had three hits and joined Ryan Mountcastle by driving in a pair of runs as Baltimore won its first series since sweeping the Washington Nationals on July 23-25.
Akin (1-8) allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. The victory was the second of Akin's career and first since Sept. 16, 2020.
Shohei Ohtani belted his majors-best 41st homer for the Angels, who mustered just three hits and committed three errors en route to losing for the fifth time in six games.
Elvis Peguero (0-1) endured a major league debut he'd like to forget on Thursday. He was charged for five runs on two hits with three walks in two-thirds of an inning.
Acquired in the Andrew Heaney deal last month with the New York Yankees, Peguero allowed one-out walks to Cedric Mullins and Mountcastle in the fifth inning before Trey Mancini's RBI single to center field gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead. DJ Stewart's RBI double to left field plated Mountcastle before Urias walked to load the bases and spell the end of Peguero's afternoon.
Jake Petricka was greeted rudely by Severino, who deposited a first-pitch fastball over the wall in center field to push Baltimore's advantage to 7-1. The homer was Severino's 10th of the season and first since Aug. 6.
Ohtani went 1-for-8 with five strikeouts in the first two games of the series before starting Thursday afternoon off with a bang. The All-Star led off the game by sending an 0-1 curveball from Akin over the wall in right field for his first career homer in Camden Yards.
The Orioles answered in the third inning after Jahmai Jones doubled to left field and came around to score on Kelvin Gutierrez's single to right.
