Yankees 4, Mariners 2: Masahiro Tanaka matched his career high with 11 strikeouts while going the distance and Mark Teixeira hit a three-run homer as visiting New York defeated Seattle for the second straight night.
Tanaka (10-1) gave up six hits and one walk in his second complete-game effort of the season to join Toronto’s Mark Buehrle as the only 10-game winners in the major leagues. The Japanese right-hander has won four straight starts, allowing four runs and 20 hits in 29 2/3 innings during the stretch.
Jacoby Ellsbury drove in a run while going 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games while Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter also had two hits apiece for the Yankees. Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer in the ninth for Seattle – his first at home all season and third overall – but Tanaka responded by striking out the final two batters in a 110-pitch performance.
New York put its first two runners aboard against Chris Young (5-4) in the third inning before Ellsbury stroked a one-out, run-scoring single to center. Gardner and Ellsbury reached on singles in the fifth before Teixeira smacked a one-out blast over the fence in right to make it a four-run margin.
Tanaka retired the first 10 batters before James Jones singled in the fourth and Kyle Seager added a base hit later in the inning. The Mariners also threatened in the eighth, when Mike Zunino doubled with one out and Brad Miller singled before Cole Gillespie lined into an inning-ending double play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle placed 1B Justin Smoak (quadriceps) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled OF-1B Logan Morrison (hamstring) from a rehab stint at Triple-A Tacoma. Morrison was 0-for-4 and fanned twice against Tanaka. … The Yankees activated RHP Shawn Kelley (back) from the disabled list, acquired LHP David Huff from the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations, optioned RHP Matt Daley to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated LHP Wade LeBlanc for assignment. … Young gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings.
