Yankees 6, Red Sox 0: Kelly Johnson and Brett Gardner homered in support of 5 2/3 strong innings from Vidal Nuno as New York took the series opener from visiting Boston.
Mark Teixeria added a sacrifice fly, Derek Jeter recorded a pair of hits in his first game since turning 40 and Brian McCann put it away with a two-run blast in the eighth as the Yankees pulled even at home at 18-18. Nuno (2-4), who allowed 12 earned runs in his previous two starts, struck out five and scattered two hits and two walks to grab his first win since May 7.
Brandon Workman (1-1) made his first start since serving a six-game suspension and was knocked around for a season-high four runs on seven hits in as many innings to absorb his first loss. Brock Holt and Stephen Drew doubled to highlight the offense for the Red Sox, who failed to score more than three runs for the 11th time in 13 games.
Jeter dumped a single into right in the first inning and moved to third on Jacoby Ellsbury’s double before scoring on Teixeira’s fly to left. New York stranded the bases loaded in the third inning before breaking the game open with the long ball in the fourth.
Workman tried to work around a leadoff single but let a 1-1 fastball drift over the middle to Johnson, who drove it into the stands in right-center. Gardner followed and popped a 3-2 fastball into the front row of the short porch in right to make it 4-0.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox RF Shane Victorino (back) and 3B Will Middlebrooks (finger) both had their rehab assignments shut down. … The Yankees have taken six of the first eight meetings with Boston this season. … New York nearly had another home run into the short porch in right but Holt leaped at the wall to rob Brian Roberts in the second inning.
