Phillies 6, Pirates 4: Ben Revere went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs while Cole Hamels ended a four-game winless drought as Philadelphia won a series in Pittsburgh for the first time since April 25-27, 2008.
Carlos Ruiz had a two-run single among his two hits to provide some rare offense for Hamels (3-11), who received an average of 2.83 runs of support over his previous 15 starts – the lowest mark by a National League starter over that time. The left-hander struck out eight and yielded two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings.
Andrew McCutchen’s two-run single in the third was the only offense the Pirates could muster off Hamels. Gerrit Cole (4-1) allowed three runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings and took his first loss after becoming the first Pittsburgh pitcher since Nick Maddox in 1907 to win his first four career starts.
Starling Marte singled and Jose Tabata reached on an error after Hamels struck out the first two batters he faced in the third. McCutchen followed with a hard-hit grounder up the middle to stake the Pirates to an early lead before Revere’s line-drive single in the fifth scored Ruiz.
After two runners reached with one out in the sixth to end Cole’s day, Vin Mazzaro was unable to record an out and gave up run-scoring singles to Kevin Frandsen and Ruiz during a four-run frame. Reliever Justin De Fratus made it interesting with a rough eighth, but Jonathan Papelbon worked around a one-out single in the ninth for his 17th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Garrett Jones’ RBI single in the eighth capped a stretch of three straight singles off De Fratus before the right-hander induced a double-play grounder by McCutchen – which plated the game’s final run – and a flyout by Gaby Sanchez. … Revere is batting .333 since May 1 – the second-highest mark in the majors over that period behind the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout (.336). … Philadelphia improved to 4-14 in Hamels’ starts this season.
