Tigers 4, Orioles 0: Justin Verlander rebounded from his poor showing in the All-Star Game with eight solid innings as visiting Detroit won for the seventh time in eight games.
Verlander (10-5) allowed three hits and two walks while fanning eight to improve to 7-0 in 10 career starts against Baltimore.
Austin Jackson’s leadoff homer started Verlander on his way to his fifth win in six starts. The Detroit ace allowed five first-inning runs while starting last Tuesday’s All-Star Game for the American League.
Miguel Cabrera added his 20th homer in the ninth for Detroit. Jose Valverde worked the bottom of the ninth in a non-save situation.
Jackson led off the game with a homer to right-center field. The Tigers added a second-inning run as Brennan Boesch doubled to left center, moved to third on a wild pitch by Miguel Gonzalez (1-1) and scored on a single to right-center by Jhonny Peralta.
The Tigers increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth on a two-out single by Alex Avila.
Gonzalez allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings in his second big-league start. He walked five and struck out three.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Detroit scored 11 two-out runs in the series. … Orioles RHP Jason Hammel was placed on the disabled list Sunday and will undergo knee surgery to remove floating cartilage. He will be sidelined a minimum of three to four weeks. … Jackson has scored at least one run in 12 consecutive games, equaling the longest streak by a Detroit player since Rocky Colavito scored in 12 straight games in 1961. … Baltimore 2B Robert Andino left in the sixth inning after injuring his left shoulder while making a diving attempt on Avila’s single.
