Chris Denorfia stole home and added an RBI single during a four-run second as the San Diego Padres avoided a season sweep with a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday afternoon.
Chase Headley chipped in three hits and Heath Bell locked down his 29th save in front of scouts for the Padres, who had dropped their previous 10 meetings with Philadelphia.
San Diego got to Cliff Lee in the second, knotting it at 1-1 on Rob Johnson’s RBI double and taking the lead when Denorfia singled. Denorfia advanced to second on the throw home and stole third before Jason Bartlett walked.
Lee attempted to pick Bartlett off first and Denorfia broke for home, sliding in easily.
Lee (9-7) lasted only four innings and was charged with five runs and 10 hits. The lefthander, who went 5-0 with one run allowed in 42 innings in June, has yet to win in four July starts while posting an ERA just under 5.00.
Aaron Harang (9-2) lasted six innings to grab the win. He has not lost since May 2.
