Luis Castillo struck out a career-best 13 batters to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-4 win against the visiting Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a two-game series on Monday night.
Castillo (11-4) allowed two runs on solo homers by Luis Rengifo and Mike Trout, gave up three hits overall and walked one on a career-high 119 pitches over seven innings.
Brian Goodwin hit a two-run homer in the ninth off struggling Reds reliever David Hernandez to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Raisel Iglesias replaced Hernandez and struck out pinch hitter Shohei Ohtani for the final out and his 22nd save.
Angels right-hander Taylor Cole struggled as an opener for the second straight time.
Cole (1-3) surrendered five runs and five hits in the first inning, three days after he allowed four runs and four hits while recording just one out in a 7-3 loss in Cleveland.
Jesse Winker led off the first with a single for the Reds and Joey Votto walked. After Cole got a strikeout, Aristides Aquino lifted a soft single to center to score Winker for a 1-0 lead.
Jose Iglesias then lined an opposite-field double into the right-field corner to score Votto. Cole jammed Nick Senzel, but he managed to lift a soft single over the first baseman's head, scoring two more runs for a 4-0 lead.
Jose Peraza followed with a double off the wall in left-center to make it 5-0.
Trout then dropped a routine fly ball in center field for just his third error since the start of the 2017 season. Peraza stopped at third on the play, and Cole was able to get out of the inning without further damage.
Patrick Sandoval made his major league debut in the second inning for the Angels. The Orange County native went five innings, allowing two runs, both on wild pitches, and three hits. He struck out eight and walked two.
Rengifo led off the third with a home run to center, his fourth of the season and second in three games against the Reds this season.
Trout went deep in the sixth to make it 6-2. It was Trout's 37th of the season.
