Luke Voit hit two home runs, and Brett Gardner finished a home run short of the cycle as the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-5 Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif.

Gardner, who went 4-for-5, came to the plate in the eighth inning needing that home run to become just the fifth Yankee in the last 70 years to hit for the cycle (Mickey Mantle, Bobby Murcer, Tony Fernandez and Melky Cabrera).

Gardner hit a line drive to right field, where Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun made a diving attempt. Calhoun was able to snag the ball on a short-hop, holding Gardner to a single and perhaps preventing him from attempting to make history with an inside-the-park homer to complete the cycle.

The win was the Yankees' fifth in a row, while the Angels have lost eight of nine.

The Angels trailed 7-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning but loaded the bases against Yankees reliever Chad Green with no outs. Justin Bour, who had just one homer in 63 at-bats on the season, hit a 1-2 pitch from Green over the fence in center field for a grand slam, the fourth of his career.

The blast cut the Yankees' lead to 7-5.

Luis Cessa replaced Green but the Angels kept the pressure on. Andrelton Simmons doubled and Albert Pujols walked, putting the potential tying run on base.

But Cessa worked his way out of the jam, first striking out Brian Goodwin and then getting Kevan Smith to ground into an inning-ending double play.

New York's Zack Britton pitched the ninth for his first save.

The Yankees finished with 14 hits, including Mike Ford's first career major league home run.

Angels starter Chris Stratton (0-2) went five innings, yielding four runs and nine hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Domingo German (4-1) started for the Yankees, the result of Monday's 14-inning game in the series opener. Jonathan Loaisiga was initially called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the Tuesday game, but instead he was sent to the bullpen to bolster a tired relief corps.

German made the most of his opportunity, throwing 6 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and one walk. He fanned five.

Loaisiga did not get into the game.
