Trea Turner hit a solo homer on a full count with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the host Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 6-5 on Sunday, avoiding a three-game series sweep.

It was the second homer of the game for Turner, who hit a three-run shot in the third inning. Victor Robles had two doubles and Adam Eaton had three hits for the Nationals.

Free agent pitcher Patrick Corbin, signed after last season by the Nationals, gave up two runs on seven hits while pitching six innings in his first start of the season.

But the Mets scored three runs in the top of eighth off the Nationals bullpen, with RBI singles by Amed Rosario, Wilson Ramos and Juan Lagares. The last run came against closer Sean Doolittle (1-0), who still got the win as he pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.

The losing pitcher was Justin Wilson (1-1), who gave up the homer to Turner in the ninth.

Robles had given Washington some insurance in the sixth, as he lined a double to left to score Yan Gomes for a 5-2 lead.

J.D. Davis doubled to lead off the sixth and later scored on a double play as the Mets trimmed the margin to 4-2. Washington second baseman Brian Dozier made a nifty exchange to shortstop Turner to nip Rosario at first for the twin killing.

The Nationals made it 4-1 in the last of fifth with an RBI single by Anthony Rendon.

Turner hit a three-run homer off Mets starter Zack Wheeler in the third to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Wheeler went five innings and gave up four runs on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Mets rookie Pete Alonso had an RBI double in the third as New York took a 1-0 lead.

The Nationals had runners on first and third with one out in the first but didn't score. Juan Soto struck out looking while Ryan Zimmerman grounded into a force to end the threat.

The last time the Nationals were swept in the first series of the year was 2009, by the Marlins.
