Vince Velasquez took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the third time this season, and Odubel Herrera and Rhys Hoskins homered for Philadelphia on Sunday night, leading the host Phillies to a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres and a split of a day-night doubleheader.
The Padres, who amassed 15 hits in winning the opener 10-2, got only two hits in the second game against Velasquez and three relievers.
Velasquez's final line was two hits, a walk and a hit batter with seven strikeouts in seven innings. In two career starts against the Padres, Velasquez has pitched 16 shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk with 20 strikeouts.
Herrera hit a solo homer with one out in the fourth inning against Padres starter Luis Perdomo to break up a scoreless tie. Herrera's team-leading 17th long ball of the season produced the game's only run until the Phillies broke through with a four-run seventh inning that was capped by Hoskins' second homer of the day, a three-run shot off Padres reliever Phil Maton.
San Diego's A.J. Ellis opened the sixth with a line-drive, one-hop single to left to break up Velasquez's no-hit bit. Until that point, the only Padres to reach base were Jose Pirela, who was hit by a pitch in the second, and former Philly Freddy Galvis, who drew a walk in the fifth.
Velasquez gave up a second hit in the sixth, a one-out single by Pirela, who was erased on a double play.
San Diego's Pat Neshek worked a perfect eighth and Adam Morgan got the first two outs in the ninth before Seranthony Dominguez came in to get the final out.
Perdomo (1-5) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
Herrera's homer was the only run charged to Perdomo before the Padres starter left the game after giving up a single to Scott Kingery and hitting Jorge Alfaro with one out in the seventh. Carlos Santana upped the Phillies' lead to 2-0 with a two-out RBI single off Maton immediately ahead of Hoskins' 16th homer.
