Wil Myers, who tied a Padres record with three homers Saturday night, homered off Arizona catcher Jeff Mathis with two outs in the top of the 16th inning Sunday to give San Diego a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks at Phoenix.

Mathis, who caught the first 15 innings, was called upon to pitch after the Diamondbacks ran out of pitchers. Mathis was Arizona's 10th pitcher, starting with Zack Greinke. The Diamondbacks used all seven members of their bullpen plus their Friday starter, Zack Godley, who pitched the 15th.

Mathis retired the first two hitters he faced in the 16th before Myers drove a full-count fastball into the seats in right center.

Left-handed closer Brad Hand (2-4), the ninth pitcher deployed by the Padres, got the win to give San Diego a split of the four-game series. Hand pitched the final two innings, stranding the tying run at third in the 16th.

The game seesawed through the first six innings -- then was scoreless over the next nine.

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Carlos Asuaje singled with one out and scored on a two-out double to left-center by Eric Hosmer, who had gone hitless in five straight starts for the first time in his career.

Arizona scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Greinke reached on a forceout and was at third with two outs when Padres starter Clayton Richard hit Jon Jay with a pitch and walked Paul Goldschmidt. A.J. Pollock followed with a two-run single.

The Padres tied the game in the top of the fourth on three straight, two-out singles by Freddy Galvis, Manuel Margot and Austin Hedges. But Richard walked Ketel Marte to open the bottom of the fourth, and the second baseman scored from first on Mathis' double.

The Padres tied the game in the top of the sixth. Margot doubled with one out against reliever Randall Delgado and scored on a two-out single by pinch hitter Jose Pirela.

Neither starter was around as long as anticipated. Richard failed to complete six innings for the first time in 11 starts since May 2. He gave up three runs on five hits, four walks and two hit batters (Jay both times) with two strikeouts over five innings.

Greinke allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
