Orioles 14, Yankees 5: Delmon Young homered among three hits and drove in three as Baltimore pounded out 20 hits in evening the series with host New York.
Adam Jones and Matt Wieters each added a two-run homer, Chris Davis drove in a pair and Nick Markakis scored twice and chipped in an RBI for the Orioles, who put up their highest scoring total of the young season. Wei-Yin Chen (1-1) benefited from the offense and hung on long enough to earn the win, surrendering four runs on nine hits in five innings.
Alfonso Soriano homered and Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 for the Yankees. Ivan Nova (1-1) got the start for New York and was knocked around for seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Baltimore jumped on Nova right away with back-to-back singles leading off the game before Davis delivered a sacrifice fly and Jones followed with a blast to straightaway center field to make it 3-0. Jonathan Schoop’s RBI double made it 4-1 in the second and the Orioles chased Nova with a three-run rally in the fourth capped by Davis’ RBI infield single into the shift in right field.
The Yankees got back into it in the bottom of the fourth, when Soriano led off with a blast to left and Yangervis Solarte doubled in a run in front of Brett Gardner’s RBI groundout to cut it to 7-4. The Orioles put the game out of reach in the sixth with four runs off Vidal Nuno, highlighted by Young’s two-run blast, and Wieters ripped a two-run homer to left in the eighth to give every starter at least one hit.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees' Francisco Cervelli started at first base after never before playing the position in the minors or the majors. … Soriano’s blast was just the second of the season for New York, and Kelly Johnson added a solo blast in the eighth to give the team its first multi-homer game. … Orioles INF Ryan Flaherty, who entered the game 1-for-21, recorded three hits while starting at SS in place of J.J. Hardy (back spasms).
