Padres 4, Giants 1: Nick Hundley homered and Ian Kennedy struck out seven over six innings as San Diego defeated visiting San Francisco in the opener of the three-game series.
Kennedy (6-9) yielded one run on five hits and two relievers pitched scoreless inning before Huston Street worked a perfect ninth for his 26th save to extend his scoreless inning streak to 19 1/3. San Diego snapped its three-game losing skid despite being held to four hits.
Giants starter Barry Zito (4-11) walked three batters in the second inning, when Chris Denorfia capped a three-run rally with a two-out, two-run single to right field. Zito turned in another brief outing, exiting after giving up four runs over four frames.
Hundley added to the Padres’ lead with a solo shot off Zito in the fourth before the Giants answered in the fifth with Brandon Belt’s RBI double. Hundley has seven hits with three home runs in 18 career at-bats against Zito, who has one winning decision in his last 20 starts.
Belt had two hits for San Francisco, which had runners at second and third with two outs in the eighth before Brandon Crawford grounded out to pitcher Luke Gregerson to end the threat. Crawford went 0-for-4 and has one hit over his last 22 at-bats.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Padres recalled RHP Burch Smith from Triple-A Tucson. … Giants RHP Matt Cain (forearm contusion) threw 90 pitches in the bullpen prior to the game and is expected to return Saturday against the Diamondbacks. … Padres 3B Chase Headley missed his fifth straight game with a stiff back.
