Angels 6, Astros 5: Alberto Callaspo had two RBIs, including the tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, as visiting Los Angeles defeated Houston to snap a four-game losing streak.
Mark Trumbo tied the contest with a two-run double earlier in the eighth off Hector Ambriz (0-2) before Albert Pujols scored from third on Callaspo’s deep fly, a drive that was snagged by Astros center fielder Brandon Barnes in a sliding manner on the warning track.
Ernesto Frieri recorded the final five outs for his fifth save. Garrett Richards (2-3) picked up the victory.
Matt Dominguez drove in three runs for Houston and his two-run single in the sixth gave the Astros a 5-3 lead. Jose Altuve went 3-for-5, while Barnes and Chris Carter had run-scoring singles.
Josh Hamilton and Brendan Harris hit solo homers for the Angels. Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings and Houston counterpart Lucas Harrell issued six walks while giving up two runs (one earned) and four hits in five innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles protested the game in the seventh inning when the umpires allowed Astros reliever Wesley Wright to be removed from the game without throwing a pitch. … Angels SS Erick Aybar left in the fourth inning with a hamstring injury. … Houston released OF Rick Ankiel, who was designated for assignment earlier in the week.
