Nationals 4, Marlins 1: Stephen Strasburg worked six scoreless innings and helped himself with a two-run single as host Washington clinched a win in its four-game series with Miami.
Adam LaRoche added two RBIs, giving him nine in the last five games, and Drew Storen recorded his first save of the season for the Nationals, who maintained their comfortable lead over the Atlanta Braves in the National League East.
Strasburg (12-5) bounced back from his worst start of the season to dominate the Marlins, striking out six while allowing three hits and walking one. The right-hander also continued his surprisingly effective hitting, going 1-for-2 to raise his average to .343.
Strasburg’s single in the second provided all the support he would need on the mound. Jayson Werth singled and Danny Espinosa was hit by a pitch before both moved up on a long flyout by Jesus Flores. Strasburg followed and laced an opposite-field single to right-center to pick up his sixth and seventh RBIs.
LaRoche came up three batters later and made it a four-run frame when he drove a single to center, scoring Strasburg and Steve Lombardozzi.
Washington did all its damage against Miami starter Ricky Nolasco (8-11), who was charged with four runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked four and recorded four strikeouts.
Jose Reyes continued to provide highlights for the Marlins, singling in the third to increase his career-best hitting streak to 24 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Reyes’ hitting streak is the longest in the majors this season, topping the 23-game streak of New York Yankees All-Star Robinson Cano. Reyes is still 11 games shy of tying the Marlins’ franchise record, set by Luis Castillo in 2002. … Nationals SS Ian Desmond (oblique) will travel with the team on its upcoming 10-game road trip but there is no set timetable for his return. … Washington heads to Houston for a four-game series on Monday while Miami gets a day off before continuing its trip at New York.
