Red Sox 4, Mariners 3:
Cody Ross hit a three-run homer and Ryan Lavarnway put visiting Boston ahead with a solo blast as the Red Sox snapped a seven-game slide.

Jon Lester (9-11) battled through six innings and James Loney recorded a pair of hits for Boston, which entered the contest having been outscored 58-16 in the first seven games of their road trip.

Seattle outhit the Red Sox by an 11-10 margin, but still suffered their third loss in the last five games. Jesus Montero recorded three hits and an RBI and Kyle Seager homered among two hits for the Mariners.

Blake Beavan (9-9) was cruising along until the sixth inning as Boston quickly tied the game. Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury led off with back-to-back singles and Ross followed by driving a first-pitch curveball out to left field for his 20th home run.

Beavan retired the next two batters but left a 1-0 fastball up to Lavarnway, who hammered it into the stands in left for his first major league home run since September 2001.

The Mariners had gotten to Lester early, pushing a run across in the first on Montero’s RBI single and making it a 3-0 advantage in the third on back-to-back solo home runs by Franklin Gutierrez and Seager.

Lester scattered nine hits and three runs while walking two and striking out four. Three relievers bridged the gap to Andrew Bailey, who worked around a two-out triple in the ninth for his second save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pedroia’s single in the sixth extended his hitting streak to 15 games. … Gutierrez and Seager were the first Mariners to hit back-to-back home runs since July 2. … Red Sox SS Jose Igelsias doubled in the fifth to snap an 0-for-16 drought since being recalled from Triple-A. It was his first career extra-base hit. … Boston recalled RHP Clayton Mortensen from Double-A Portland. It will be his sixth different stint with the team this season. … Seattle and the Red Sox completed a trade prior to the game, with the Mariners sending minor league C Guillermo Quiroz to the Red Sox for cash considerations.
