Yankees 13, Orioles 3: Curtis Granderson homered and drove in five runs and Derek Jeter added a home run and three RBIs as visiting New York escaped Baltimore with a series split and a one-game lead in the American League East.
Jayson Nix and Ichiro Suzuki each singled in a run in a four-run fourth inning to break the game open for the Yankees, who are also two games clear of the Tampa Bay Rays in the division.
Zach Britton (5-2) was charged with five runs on five hits and as many walks in 3 1/3 innings for the Orioles, who are one game up on the Rays in the wild-card race and host a three-game series against Tampa Bay beginning Tuesday. The Oakland Athletics, winners later Sunday, extended their wild-card lead to 1 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore.
New York grabbed a run in the first and knocked Britton out in the fourth. Alex Rodriguez led off with a single and Britton loaded the bases on back-to-back walks before walking Steve Pearce to force in a run. Andruw Jones struck out but Nix and Suzuki each singled and Jeter drew another bases-loaded walk to cap the uprising.
The Orioles responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth but the bullpen could not hold off New York. Granderson pinch hit for Jones in the sixth and sent his 35th homer into the Baltimore bullpen in left-center.
Granderson singled in a pair in the seventh and capped a five-run rally in the eighth with a bases-loaded double to right to push across two more. Jeter began the eighth-inning explosion with a two-run homer to right-center off Kevin Gregg.
Joba Chamberlain (1-0) earned the win with 1 2/3 hitless innings of relief for the Yankees.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York 1B Mark Teixeira (calf) was out Sunday and will miss at least the next three games. Teixeira returned after a 10-game absence on Saturday and re-injured the calf trying to beat out a double-play ball that ended the game. … Granderson had been in a 2-for-19 slump with no RBIs over the previous seven games. … Baltimore RF Nick Markakis (broken thumb) will have an MRI Monday and could visit a hand specialist to determine if surgery is needed. Chris Davis started in right for the Orioles on Sunday. … The Yankees begin a three-game set at last-place Boston on Tuesday. … Britton had allowed a total of three runs in 28 2/3 innings over his previous four starts.
