David Ortiz hit a pinch-hit solo home run with one out in the ninth inning to lift the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader at Comerica Park on Sunday.
It was the fifth straight win for Boston, which has won 13 of its last 15 games overall.
Ortiz blasted a line-drive homer, his first pinch-hit home run since 2003, off loser Jose Valverde (2-2).
Matt Albers picked up the win in relief for Boston and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save.
Boston took a 3-0 lead on solo homers by Dustin Pedroia and Mike Cameron and a sacrifice fly by Adrian Gonzalez.
But the Tigers chipped away getting a solo homer by Andy Dirks in the fourth inning and another by Brennan Boesch in the sixth. Detroit tied the game on an RBI single by Jhonny Peralta.
Neither starter figured in the decision. Clay Buchholz went six innings allowing six hits and three runs. Andy Oliver made his season debut for Detroit and allowed three runs on five hits in six innings.
